Notes:
Steamboats were essential to the river commerce of Pittsburgh as well as the Northeast and Midwest states and territories during the mid-19th century prior to the domination of the railroads and freight barges. Steamboats on western waters in 1846 carried 10,126,160 tons of freight valued at $432,621,240.
