View of the Eliza Furnace, Hazelwood, PA.
Eliza Furnace was part of the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation's complex of mills along the Monongahela River, just a few miles from downtown Pittsburgh. In 1945, there were 1293 manufacturing establishments similar to this one in Pittsburgh. They produced the smog and pollution for which the city was notorious until 1950. Today all these mills have been replaced by residential and commercial developments.
